Translating Basic Science Into Bullying Prevention Programming

Friday, November 13, 2015 - 3:10pm to 4:30pm
Linderman Library, Room 200

In this presentation, Dr. Hubbard will first describe a series of studies conducted in her laboratory in which they have delineated the subtypes of childhood aggression and victimization, investigated the negative outcomes associated with victimization, and examined the mechanisms underlying the reactive and proactive subtypes of aggression. Building on this work, she will next discuss the bystander theory of bullying prevention and describe additional work from our lab that supports this theory. Finally, she will describe thei current efforts to implement and evaluate the effectiveness of the KiVa Anti-Bullying Program in Delaware schools. The KiVa Program has emerged from Finland as the most evidence-based school-wide bullying prevention program to date, and it is currently being disseminated to a number of countries throughout Europe and Asia. Their efforts represent the first time that the KiVa Program has been implemented or evaluated in the US, and for this reason their evaluation includes a strong focus on cultural modification and adaptability.
